Can you visit Ijen without a midnight start? A daytime trek offers a different way to experience the same volcano. You walk in natural light, see the trail and caldera landscape clearly, and can arrange the day around a more comfortable night’s sleep. The trade-off is that the blue fire is a night phenomenon and will not be visible.
What you will see
From the Paltuding trailhead, the main path climbs roughly three kilometres to the rim of Kawah Ijen. From safe viewpoints, visitors may see the turquoise acidic crater lake, volcanic rock, sulfur vents and the wider mountain setting. Clouds, wind and gas can change the view quickly. Access, timing and equipment
Daytime entry is subject to the park’s current opening hours and official restrictions. We check those before fixing a departure time; a late start cannot be assumed on every date. Wear supportive shoes and layers for mountain weather, carry water, and follow any instructions about masks or permitted areas. The applicable medical check may be required. Never approach the lake or descend into closed sections.
