Jodipan Colour Village gives your East Java itinerary a different perspective: a walk through a lived-in riverside neighbourhood rather than another mountain viewpoint. Painted houses and narrow lanes make it a good choice if you enjoy colour, street photography and discovering a city on foot.
What is Jodipan Colour Village?
Also called Kampung Warna-Warni Jodipan, this neighbourhood stands beside the Brantas River in Malang. It became a recognised visitor attraction after a painting project involving local residents, university students and supporters. The Malang City Government’s account of the September 2016 inauguration identifies students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang as the initiators.
The appeal comes from seeing ordinary houses and shared spaces presented in bright colours. This is still a residential neighbourhood, so the experience is best approached as a respectful walk through someone’s community. Pause for the artwork and views while keeping entrances and narrow passages clear.
Things to do in Jodipan
Explore the painted lanes. Walk slowly through the neighbourhood and look for changing colours, small decorative details and different perspectives between houses. A shorter visit can focus on the accessible entrance area; a longer walk gives you time to explore further without rushing.
Photograph the streets and riverside setting. Combine wide views with close details rather than taking only portraits. Ask before photographing residents closely or entering private spaces. A guide can help with conversation and explain the distinction between visitor areas and people’s homes.
Add a Malang city experience. Make Jodipan the walking element of a day that also leaves time for lunch and another city stop chosen around your interests. It offers a useful contrast to the landscapes of Bromo and Tumpak Sewu.
How long should you allow?
For itinerary planning, we suggest allowing around one to two hours, depending on your walking pace and interest in photography. This is our planning allowance, not an official required duration. Include time for arrival and meeting your driver; a quick photo stop and a relaxed neighbourhood walk are different visits.
When to visit and what to bring
A morning visit is a practical choice if you prefer walking before the warmer part of the day. Bring drinking water, sun protection and comfortable shoes. The lanes include changes in level and steps, so tell us before booking if anyone needs a route with minimal stairs. Rain can affect footing and photography.
Combining Jodipan with Bromo or Tumpak Sewu
Jodipan can work on a Malang arrival day or between overnight stays, with the route built around your hotel and onward destination. After an overnight Bromo sunrise trip, leave room for rest before committing to another walk. For Tumpak Sewu, a separate transfer or city day usually gives more flexibility than squeezing the village into a demanding waterfall schedule.
Frequently asked questions
Is Jodipan a theme park?
No. It is a residential neighbourhood that welcomes visitors. Follow local signs and requests, and treat its public lanes and homes with consideration.
Can I combine Jodipan with every Batu attraction in one day?
Choose a few priorities. City traffic, travel between Malang and Batu, and time inside larger attractions can quickly fill the day. We will help you compare a city-focused route with a highland-focused route.
