← Batu & Malang destination guide
Omah Kayu and the Gunung Banyak paragliding area offer two ways to enjoy Batu’s highlands: stay on the hillside for the panorama, or consider a tandem flight when conditions permit. This is an appealing addition for travellers who want mountain scenery without planning another long volcano trek.
Where are Omah Kayu and Gunung Banyak?
Gunung Banyak is in the Songgokerto area of Batu, East Java. The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism’s Paralayang Batu guide describes views over Batu’s valley and surrounding mountains, with Omah Kayu as a separate attraction within the hillside area.
Omah Kayu means “wooden house” in Javanese. The Batu City Government’s description explains its tree-house concept: wooden structures built among pine trees. Visitors come for the setting, photographs and a different perspective on the landscape below.
What can you do here?
Enjoy a hillside panorama. Look across the valley and take time to appreciate the change from Malang’s city streets to Batu’s mountain setting. Clear views depend on visibility; cloud and mist can change what you see during a visit.
Visit the Omah Kayu area. Explore permitted viewing and photo points among the trees. Check current access arrangements for the wooden houses and platforms, follow posted capacity limits, and keep children close on steps or raised areas.
Consider tandem paragliding. A tandem flight is made with an instructor. You do not need to arrive as an experienced solo pilot, but you must follow the operator’s briefing and meet their participation requirements. Tell us in advance that you want to fly so we can check availability and booking arrangements.
Scenic visit or flight: which should you choose?
Choose the scenic visit if your priority is photography, a relaxed stop or staying on the ground. Choose a flight enquiry if the aerial experience is central to your day and you can allow flexibility. Companions who do not fly can still enjoy a sightseeing visit, subject to current access.
Paragliding depends on suitable wind, weather and the operator’s assessment. Do not build the day around a guaranteed take-off time. If conditions prevent flying, a scenic visit or another highland stop may be a better use of the available time.
How much time should you reserve?
We suggest around one to two hours for a relaxed scenic visit, excluding transfers. A flight plan needs more flexibility for registration, briefing, waiting and the return arrangements. These are itinerary suggestions; the operator confirms the actual flight programme and any limits.
How to combine it with a Batu itinerary
Omah Kayu can form part of a western highland day with Coban Rondo Waterfall or Florawisata Santerra. We recommend choosing one main additional stop rather than packing every attraction into the same afternoon. After Bromo sunrise, allow recovery time before adding a flight or a busy sightseeing programme.
Frequently asked questions
Can I visit without going paragliding?
Yes. A sightseeing visit and a tandem flight are different experiences. Confirm which entrance areas your itinerary includes.
What should I bring?
Wear shoes suitable for walking, carry a light layer and rain protection, and secure loose belongings. If you plan to fly, request the operator’s equipment and clothing instructions before arrival.
